What to do against a throat infection?

What to do against a throat infection? As previously mentioned in this article, a throat infection is a nasty disease. Fortunately there are some things you can do about a throat infection.

What can you do yourself?

  • Eat ice-cream
  • Drink something cold
  • Gurgling chamomile tea
  • Gurgling salty water
  • Don't speak alot

Eating ice cream and drinking a cold drink allows the blood vessels in your throat to shrink. This reduces the swelling and will relieve some pain. The chamomile tea helps to disinfect the throat. You can also buy speciale gurgling drinks at the chemist but they taste even worse than the tea. It is also important not to talk. This will relieve some tension of your throat and vocal chords. If the throat infection stays longer than a week, you should contact your doctor.  The doctor can do several things.

What can the docter do?

  • Prescribe painkillers
  • Prescribe anti-infection drugs
  • Prescribe antibiotics
  • Refer to a hospital

Painkillers speak for themselves, they kill the pain. Look out with those painkillers! Significant reduction in pain will allow you to do more things with your throat. This may slow down the healing process!  The doctor may also prescribe anti-infection drugs, these have almost the same effect as antibiotics. When the infection starts to become chronic, the doctor will prescribe antibiotics. The antibiotics will heal your throat in ten days or so. In some very rare cases you may be referred to a hospital.
