Tips to reduce a hangover

Most people know the feeling of a hangover. A worn-out feeling, you're unable to eat anything, and you feel nauseous all day long. A terrible headache is another consequence of a rough night out. Often, the culprit is red wine. Most people tend to wait patiently for the feeling to subside. But are there any antidotes that can reduce a hangover? Yes, there are. Some tips to beat the hangover.

Don't drink

This may sound a bit cliché, but not getting a hangover in the first place is the best way to fight it. But, since you are reading this, it is probably already too late for that. And seeing how 99% of the people drink alcohol once in a while, it may be best not to ponder this tip for too long and move on to the next one.

Be careful about what you drink

Alcoholic beverages with a lot of coloring- or fragrance additions (natural or not) usually cause a hangover. Drinking several kinds of alcoholic beverage after each other usually aggravates the process. Drinking several kinds of beer can be enough for an extreme hangover. Even a not-so-clean tap in a bar can cause that worn-out feeling. So think about what you are going to have before you drink, and try to choose neutral drinks, with few additions. Vodka, for example.

Drink a lot of water

Drinking water between alcoholic drinks is important to avoid dehydration. Alcohol causes dehydration and affects the mucosa in your stomach and intestines. So make sure you drink at least one litre of water on a night out. This may seem like a lot, but remember your body will be working hard to break down the alcohol while you sleep. So it needs this extra water to keep the physical damage limited.

Coffee

Many people think that a few cups of coffee can work miracles against a hangover. However, this is not the case. The amount of caffeine in the coffee works as a little boost and may help you get a clear mind during the hangover. This can be great while at work. But this is only a little solace, because the hangover will still be around for a while.

Sleeping in

If you know you are going to drink a lot, it can be good to make sure you will not have to be too active the day after. If you party on until 4 AM, and you have to get up at 7 AM to go to work the next day, it won't come as a surprise that your body has only just begun to clean up the alcohol. As a result, the hangover will last a lot longer. You might even still be drunk when you arrive at work. So don't drink to much if you have to get up early. And if you are planning to drink more than you know you should, at least make sure you can sleep until the late afternoon.
